1. To never allow a person to experience the fresh air of freedom, the privilege to make mistakes, and learn from them, the ability to judge for oneself the good or the bad nature of one’s actions, to provide a reasonable amount of shelter from false retribution however popular the violated tenet may be.
Or
2. To give all the freedom mentioned above, and then abruptly/selectively/occasionally take it away, leaving one with the fragrance of liberty that was once almost like an extension of one’s existence, a limb without which the body doesn’t know how to function?

The purpose of sports is to unite, divide, excite, propel to celebration, or to mourning, or simply stir as many emotions as possible, while testing the discipline of it’s student!
By that definition, the player who creates most emotions in the minds of the audience should be defined the greatest! Sreesanth comes to mind, but his reasons have nothing to do with sports.
